Day 154 Davis Path Campsite to Partnership Shelter

October 11

Miles ~14
Total:

Last night at the campsite we met these really lovely men that we shared our campsite and picnic table with.  Both of them are into scouting and got into it when their boys were young.  They met when Louis brought his two sons too join Ridgeline's cub scout troop. At that time they were both living in Memphis. Since then, their boys have grown (in their 30s) and both have moved away but for the last five years they meet up every year to go hiking together.  I just think that's great!  We enjoyed dinner with them and saw them again this morning before we started off to Atkins. They thought it was so neat that Jamie and I are Eagle and Gold and that we got married that they took our picture before we left them.  They're finishing up their hike tomorrow.  I hope they have safe travels home.
Jamie and I really enjoyed today.  15 miles felt like nothing!  We walked three into town to eat breakfast at The Barn.  While we missed out on the famous "1lb hiker Burger" we did get their 2X4 breakfast.  2ggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage, 2 pancakes, grits and a biscuit.  Delicious!
After breakfast we wandered over to the Relax Inn for our food drop and then popped into the Shell station for a few snacks to tide us over til Damascus.   There was some unexpected Magic in the Shell Station.  As the lady was ringing up our disgusting (but delicious) purchases she asked us if we like breakfast Pizza.  Of course we answered yes.  She then tells us that she's got 4 that she'll need to throw away soon and she'd rather give them to us.   YES!  I had to restrain from skipping around the store.
So, thanks to the Shell Lady we had a delicious dinner.
On the way up, we popped into the Settlers Museum and checked out the one room schoolhouse.
We pulled into this massive shelter very early-about 4pm.  Enough time for us to fill up our platabags with water from Visitor center that's in view of the shelter.   Why would we do that?   Because the bathroom has hot water and we wanted to clean up!  It was so glorious.   Normally this "taj mahal" of a shelter has a propane heated shower but they turned it off just yesterday. YESTERDAY.  What a bummer.  I don't blame them though. This morning was the first frost we walked through.  However, it's also the first day since October 1st that we've had any sunshine and that makes up for a cold morning.

Beautiful Sunrise.

The view down the street in Atkins, The Barn and farther down on the right the Shell station and beyond that the Relax Inn.  Everything we needed.
Everyone's Packs.
Jamie after having eaten a delicious breakfast at The Barn.  Also, everyone in the background is a thru-hiker.
