Day 134: Tom Floyd shelter to Pass Mountain shelter

September 19th 2012

Miles 23
Total 1247
Sites: elk hollow wayside Shenandoah National Park, one owl, two bears
One owl and two bears!  Could a day get any better? When we first got into the park the trail followed a fire road for a bit.  Huge bird swoops down and perched on a limb about 20 feet above the trail. We tried to take pictures from a distance so as not to scare it off but as we crept closer it never left the branch.  It watched  us walk past it and we tried to engage with it. Really cool. Then later in the day, after our lunch break at the elk hollow wayside where everyone told us of their bear experiences, we plodded on knowing that like Maine, we weren't going to see the most prolific park animal.  But low and behold, about 2 miles later, a bear stumbled upon us on the trail. The poor thing jump back and ran off.  To our surprise, hey second pair followed. Very exciting. The last 5 miles of our twenty three mile day was like walking on sunshine!  We were so excited.

crazy bugs!
