We took off from the town of Bunbury (where we were staying with my cousin and her husband) at 6AM via train to Perth (the biggest city in West Australia) and hopped on a bus out to a suburb about an hour away called Kalamunda (fun, right?). All relatively painless! That put us at the info center at about 9:30 AM, not bad for a first day! We checked in there and quickly hit the trail.

The Bibbulmun Track
Jamie and I are doing another long walk. It's called the Bibbulmun Track. It's a 1000k (620mile) walk down the western side of Australia. It goes from Perth to Albany. We're leaving tomorrow morning so I don't have much time because of course I'm in the throes of packing, but I thought you might be interested in our new toy. We got a Spot device. You can track our progress online! How cool is that?
Here's the link.
Just follow this link to see my location updates:

If the link doesn't work, try copying and pasting it to your browser's address bar.
You should also check out the website for the Bibbulmun. They've got a great website and the map of the track is fun because it has pictures of all the shelters/towns. We are starting in the North and heading South. We imagine it will take us about a month.
Until my next post, here's a picture of us with some Kangaroos.

On the road again!
Here we are again on the road after a two week hiatus in Massachusetts. We had a great time celebrating Shannon's birthday, seeing family, resting, and gearing up, but the remainder of our journey is calling us back and we are exited to answer the call!
We aren't exactly rushing to get to Harper's Ferry, however, so we won't actually be starting again until the 14th. So we are sort of on a journey to our journey! Currently we are blogging from the Megabus on our way to DC where we will be staying with our trail friend Duffer before we make our way over to Harper's Ferry.
Megabus is pretty great; if you haven't heard of it yet, it is one of these new style of busses that have a progressive pricing system where you can go online and pay based on the order in which you reserve your seat. If you are lucky (and early enough) to be the first, your tix will only be one dollar. It doesn't go everywhere, but it is pretty extensive and is still growing its route system.
On the bus there's wifi, power outlets, a couple of table style seats, a bathroom, two floors of seating, and even power outlets!
I highly recommend them, especially if you can plan in advance.
Ok,we are going to take advantage of our time now to further our progress in Star Trek TNG so you'll hear from us again soon!

Day 49 Birdcage to the Birdcage Via Mt Greylock
Total 471
To the astute observer you might remember that yesterday I said the SlackPack would be 23 miles yet I seem to have written 13. You might also recall that I was buying new boots in an effort to eliminate my ankle trouble. You might also know me to be a bit reckless. Fine. I'll stop stalling and tell you of my stupidity.
I hike with an aircast but I was hoping to discard it when I upgraded to high boots. As a "test" I brought my aircast but didn't put it on. Stop "tsking". I learned my lesson. Yes. I sprained my ankle. Badly. Actually, all day today was stressful-not just the ankle part.
I didn't realize that we weren't going to be able to get to the mountain until 10am. A 10am start over 23 miles made me very anxious-even without the pack on. In fact, I was so anxious and nervous that I had my first panic attack. Let me tell you how it started. First, I was having a hard time breathing which might have been partly due to spending time with more cigarette smoke that I've been around in a long time. So I had to slow down. Then I started to panic that if I was going slower than normal, we wouldn't make it over the mountain. Then I did a little math. We hike at about 2 miles an hour. 23 miles would take us around 11 hours. But 23 miles over the biggest mountain in MA might take us a little longer as I tend to get tired the longer I hike. So now, adding up the time 1 realized we might not get back until around 11pm.(i exaggerated in an effort to really freak myself out) I was NOT excited about hiking in the dark. Then I really started to panic. I couldn't breath and started crying. (Not really helping the timeframe). Having my first real panic attack, I was unsure about how to calm myself down. Jamie rubbed my back and gave me some water. Ultimately, I got myself back under control and we continued on. By the time we summit-ed around 2pm and ate lunch and I was feeling worlds better.
We even ran into a hiker we had met back at the Doyle-Baked Beans- and the other Dalton trail angel-Tom Levardi. Both things putting me in a great mood. We ate lunch and started down the other side.
Not hiking with packs is a joy! It's so easy! I felt like I was flying! But I can't fly and ultimately I came crashing down on a root and re-twisted my ankle. This time was, by far, the worst. I couldn't get up for a good 10 minutes and then I couldn't walk. Normally, when I've twisted my ankle I walk off the pain. Not so this time. I was afraid to even take off my boot and look at it. We hobbled out the last three miles and called Mr Bird to come save us. He drove us to the ER because I was afraid it was fractured. After 2 hours, X-rays and a great chat with the administrative lady we left with these words from the not-my-favorite young PA, "It's not fractured, and even though you're going to ignore me-stay off of it for a few days."
But we decided we wouldn't ignore her! So, we've called our friend Chris Watkins to come and rescue us. We're going to take some time off in the Valley. And I'll wear the Aircast forever. I mostly promise!
Top of Mount Greylock!

AT Day 15 Doyle Hotel to Clarks Ferry Shelter
Total: ~127.8
Shannon: Finally left the Doyle after 3 zero days and the swelling in my ankle has gone down. I wore the aircast-that seemed to work well. We'll try to go slow for the next few hundred or so. We're not interested in getting re-injured.
On the bright side, we were both feeling good and refreshed on our hike up here. I was worried getting back on the trail would be painful but it felt great.
Also, we stopped into a fun antiques market that had an old penny arcade. Really fun!
OH OH! And as we were crossing the bridge over the Susquehenna River we were followed and yelled at by some hawks that must have a nest underneath. The followed us for about half the bridge. It was partly terrifying/partly amazing as the hawks were so close and it was a unique experience
Jamie: Ditto on that Penny Arcade. We had a good day today, it was humid but the train never came. Ordered a smaller pack from REI yesterday. YAY! Should be waiting for us in Port Clinton within a week (unsure of our arrival time at this juncture). WE also sent home a few things, totalled 2.5 pounds. Mostly it was my clothe so that frees up some weights so i can help out with Shannon's weight while she heals up. Glad to be going again and hoping for good weather tomorrow.
